Turkmenistan (English: Turkmenistan) is a Central Asian country and was once one of the union republic of the former Soviet Union. During the Soviet Union's period its name was Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic and declared its independence in 1991. The country is located in the north of Iran, borders with Afghanistan on the southeast, neighbors with  Uzbekistan in the northeast, faces Kazakhstan in the northwest, neighbors with the Caspian Sea in the west, and it is a landlocked country.

Although Turkmenistan is one of the world's most arid areas, it is rich in oil and natural gas resources, and its natural gas reserves ranks fifth in the world. The country is located in the Mediterranean seismic zone, therefore it is often threatened by the earthquake. In terms of diplomacy, on 12 December 1995 the United Nations recognized Turkmenistan as a permanent neutralized country.
